Pilates
Developed by the late Joseph Pilates, the Pilates Method is a mind-body conditioning program initially designed for rehabilitation purposes during the early part of the twentieth century. Pilates was soon adopted by dancers as the philosophy blended well with their focus on core strength, co-ordination, flexibility and posture.
Pilates is based around achieving ideal core muscle control in standing or mat work exercises, combining co-ordination of deep postural stability muscles, progressing through a series of challenging movements. The method relates to any specific injuries especially recurring low back pain.
Who will benefit from Pilates?
Pilates is particularly relevant for:
- Chronic back pain sufferers
- Sports persons who have suffered injuries as a result of imbalance in their muscles
- Performers for whom good posture is vital (dancers, actors, musicians, dressage riders)
- Adolescent children coping with growth spurts and any related imbalances.
