Sports Injuries
Whether you’re a golfer or a runner, our goal is to help you return to your sport safely, without the nagging pain that is currently holding you back.
What Are Sports Injuries ?
Sports injuries can result from either sudden trauma or repetitive use of a particular body part, often causing strain, sprains, fractures, or dislocations. Athletes, both professional and amateur, are at a higher risk of these injuries due to the intensity and nature of their activities. However, sports injuries are not exclusive to athletes – anyone engaging in physical activity is vulnerable to sports injuries.
At Chichester Physio, we regularly treat people suffering from sports injuries across a variety of activities. However, we tend to see golfers and runners more often than other athletes. This isn’t because these sports are inherently more prone to injury, but rather because both golfers and runners are typically very passionate about their sport. When they are unable to participate due to pain or discomfort, they become frustrated quickly and are eager to find a solution so they can get back to doing what they love.
In the case of golfing injuries, many people associate golfer’s elbow as the primary injury in the sport, but this isn’t always the case. While golfer’s elbow is a common condition, it’s not the most frequent issue we encounter in golfers. In fact, many golfers experience problems in their back, particularly the upper back, due to the repetitive motions involved in swinging the club. The twisting and turning motion can lead to strain on the muscles in the upper back and spine, causing pain and discomfort. Additionally, the act of carrying or lifting the golf bag, or even repeatedly putting the clubs on and off, can contribute to back strain. These movements may not seem like a problem at first, but over time, they can result in muscular discomfort that affects the golfer’s ability to perform.
When it comes to running injuries, many of the issues are mechanical in nature, often stemming from improper running form. A common cause of running injuries is the way your body moves while running – specifically how your feet strike the ground, as well as any imbalances in your muscles. Over time, improper running mechanics can lead to strain on certain muscle groups, causing discomfort and potentially leading to injury.
What Are The Symptoms Of Sports Injuries ?
Swelling is a frequent symptom, especially in cases of sprains, strains, or fractures. Swelling occurs as blood and fluid accumulate around the injured tissue. Bruising may develop due to internal bleeding and the skin around the injury may appear discoloured. Stiffness can occur, making it difficult to move the injured body part fully. Limited range of motion is common, as pain and swelling can restrict movement. In more severe cases, deformities like misaligned joints or bones may be visible, signalling a fracture or dislocation. Additionally, some injuries may cause weakness, where the affected area is unable to bear weight or perform normal movements.
What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Sports Injuries ?
At Chichester Physio, we’re able to quickly assess the root cause of the issue, identify what’s causing the pain, and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Our goal is to get you back on the course as quickly and safely as possible.
For running injuries, we take a detailed approach to running injuries by assessing your running style. We look at how your feet make contact with the ground, whether your stride is consistent, and if your posture is affecting your overall form. Additionally, we assess your muscle strength, looking for areas of weakness that could contribute to overuse of certain muscles or imbalances that affect your gait. In some cases, certain muscles may not be working as effectively as they should, which leads to overcompensation by other muscles. By identifying these imbalances, we can create a personalised treatment plan that addresses the root cause of the injury.
Once we have a clear understanding of the underlying issues, we work with you to address them through specific exercises, stretches, and techniques designed to improve your running mechanics. Whether it’s strengthening weak muscles, improving flexibility, or correcting your running form, we ensure that you can get back to running pain-free, and with a reduced risk of future injury.
At Chichester Physio, we believe in taking a holistic approach to sports injuries, addressing the mechanics of the issue rather than just masking the pain. Whether you’re a golfer or a runner, our goal is to help you return to your sport safely, without the nagging pain that is currently holding you back.
