Migraines
Our goal is to improve your quality of life, allowing you to live without the constant worry of when your next migraine might strike.
What Are Migraines ?
Migraines are a type of headache characterised by intense, throbbing pain, typically on one side of the head. They are often accompanied by additional symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and heightened sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines can last anywhere from a few hours to several days and can significantly impact daily activities and quality of life.
The exact cause of migraines is not fully understood, but they are thought to be related to changes in the brain’s chemicals, nerves, and blood vessels. Common triggers include hormonal changes, such as those experienced during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause, as well as stress, certain foods and lack of sleep. Environmental factors, like bright lights or loud noises, can also provoke a migraine. Additionally, genetics can play a role, as migraines tend to run in families. Identifying specific triggers and managing them can help prevent or reduce the frequency of migraines.
What Are The Symptoms Of Migraines?
The symptoms of migraines can vary in intensity and duration, but they typically involve severe, throbbing pain on one side of the head. This pain is often accompanied by other symptoms, including nausea and vomiting, which can make it difficult to function during an episode. People with migraines may also experience heightened sensitivity to light, sound, or smells, a condition known as photophobia, phonophobia, or osmophobia.
In some cases, migraines are preceded by an “aura,” which includes visual disturbances like flashing lights, zigzag lines, or blind spots. This sensory disturbance can last anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes and typically occurs before the headache begins. Some individuals may also experience dizziness, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating during or after a migraine. The symptoms can last anywhere from a few hours to several days, and for many, the pain can be debilitating, interfering with daily activities.
What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Migraines ?
If you’re suffering from migraines, you’ve probably already visited your doctor, and been prescribed painkillers, anti-inflammatories, or a variety of other medications. The issue with migraines is that much of the research into their treatment is funded by pharmaceutical companies, which often promote medication as the primary solution. While these drugs may provide temporary relief, they do not always address the underlying causes of migraines.
At Chichester Physio, we take a different approach by focusing on the mechanics of what may be causing your migraines and what could be contributing to the pain. One of the key areas we look at is the upper part of the neck, specifically the top three joints in the cervical spine. The nerves that emerge from these joints supply sensation to the head. These nerves can become sensitised for a variety of reasons, and when they are, even the slightest provocation can lead to increased pain.
We take the time to identify the exact area where the pain is originating. By doing so, we can target the source of your discomfort and treat it directly. At Chichester Physio, we use a combination of gentle hands-on techniques, often alongside electrotherapy, to relieve tension in the muscles and joints of the neck. By calming the sensitised nerves, we can help reduce the frequency and intensity of your migraines.
Our treatment approach is tailored to each individual. We don’t just mask the symptoms with medication; instead, we aim to address the root cause of the migraines, which can lead to long-term relief. Along with hands-on therapy, we also provide exercises and posture corrections to help maintain optimal neck alignment and prevent future migraines. These exercises can be done at home and are designed to strengthen the muscles in the neck and shoulders, improving their function and reducing the likelihood of the nerves becoming irritated again.
At Chichester Physio, we believe in empowering our patients to take control of their health. By identifying and treating the underlying causes of your migraines, we aim to provide a more sustainable solution, helping you manage and reduce the frequency of your migraines without the reliance on medication. Our goal is to improve your quality of life, allowing you to live without the constant worry of when your next migraine might strike.
